The Skate Palace is a roller skating center, and a public meeting site in the Heartland of Rural America at Ida Grove, Ida County, Iowa.  It serves as a wholesome family approved recreational facility for the local area and neighboring cities and states. The Skate Palace was built by Midwest Industries and Byron Godbersen in 1982, and deeded to the Ida Grove American Legion’s Vets Memorial Club of Ida County, Inc. on January 1, 1986.

The building has a seating capacity for 900 and can be rented for all occasions: dances, wedding receptions, parties, expos, reunions, business meetings, seminars, school proms, birthday parties, and for Christmas Parties. You will find everything from colorful cotton candy to fresh popped buttery popcorn, ice cold drinks, sizzling hot dogs, cheesey nachos, soft ice cream, and catered meals.

Veterans’ Memorial Lake is directly to the west of the Skate Palace .  On Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day, there is a picturesque Avenue of Flags displayed around the lake comprised of 375 large flags flying from tall flagpoles representing deceased veterans of the area.  Families of the deceased veterans donated the flags to the Avenue of Flags with each individual veteran’s name engraved on plaques on the flagpoles. Flags are continuously being donated to the Avenue of Flags and it keeps growing larger each year.

Nearby in a grassy area is a display of a military helicopter and a howitzer, an anchor and chain from the sabotaged USS Stark, a 45 ft. CGM 13 B Mace missile with a 23-foot wing span on loan from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, and a new All Veterans Memorial dedicated on Memorial Day 2006 with the names of 739 veterans engraved on the bricks as a base for a large marble and granite “V” standing for the veterans of Ida County.  It is a living memorial to the veterans for there are more bricks, a total of 840, available for engraving the names of veterans who at one time did live in Ida County . Byron Originals of Ida Grove donated the ground for the memorial, allowing it to expand the area maintained by the Ida Grove American Legion McNamara-Moore Post 61.
